Join our founder and Head of Research, Dr Melanie Heyworth, for an in-depth online webinar designed specifically for educators and educational support staff. Drawing on Autistic lived experience and current research, Melanie reframes Autism through an Autistic lens, challenging deficit-based narratives and inviting participants to rethink traditional approaches to teaching and behaviour.

This session explores what school environments can feel like for Autistic students, acknowledging the sensory, social, and cognitive demands that can make classrooms overwhelming. Through this understanding, Melanie introduces practical, Autistic-endorsed strategies that support regulation, connection, and meaningful engagement in learning.

Grounded in a neuroaffirming framework, the webinar focuses on creating inclusive classroom practices that reduce barriers rather than placing the burden on the child to “fit in.” Participants will leave with actionable ideas they can apply immediately to foster environments where Autistic students feel safe, understood, and supported - ultimately benefiting all learners, Autistic and non-autistic alike.

Learning Objectives
  • Develop an understanding of Autism from an Autistic perspective, moving beyond deficit-based models.
  • Recognise common school-based stressors for Autistic students, including sensory, social, and environmental demands.
  • Examine how traditional classroom practices may unintentionally create barriers to engagement and wellbeing.
  • Learn practical, Autistic-endorsed strategies to support regulation, inclusion, and meaningful participation in learning.
  • Explore neuroaffirming adjustments that support both Autistic and non-autistic students.
  • Reflect on current teaching practices and identify opportunities to reduce barriers and foster a greater sense of belonging in learning environments.

"This is the best PD I have done. I already know a lot about Autistic experience from personal experience, my job, and other Autistic led PD I have done, but this took things much deeper."
